A field note on weatherproof shells, beat-up canvas and the art of dressing for a city that refuses to stay dry.

Berlin rewards clothes that can take a little punishment. Around Kreuzberg and Neukölln, the most convincing looks were less about a single label than the relationship between pieces: a technical shell over a faded sweatshirt, a work jacket with running shoes, a good trouser doing quiet work.
The common thread was useful clothing worn with enough personal history to keep it from feeling like a uniform. Nothing looked too new. Everything looked ready to leave the house.
